Step 5 - You Meet the College's Requirements
Congratulations!
If you meet the requirements for certification, the College will grant you an Interim Certificate of Qualification.
Obtaining Full Certification
Once you have satisfied all of the conditions on your Interim Certificate of Qualification you may apply to the College to convert your interim certificate to a Certificate of Qualification. You can download the form from the Ontario College of Teachers website.
Additional Information
The main requirement for converting your Interim Certificate of Qualification to a full Certificate of Qualification is to provide proof that you have taught successfully in Ontario for a period of at least 194 days. This period of time corresponds to one full school year in Ontario. This teaching experience must be acquired in classes and/or courses you were qualified to teach
There are also cases where a Temporary Letter of Approval has been granted to a school board. A Temporary Letter of Approval may sometimes be granted to certified teachers to enable them to teach a subject area for which they do not hold formal teaching qualifications. This experience must have been gained after the issue date of your original Provisional Certificate and certified as successful by an appropriate supervisory officer.
You have six years from the date you received your Interim Certificate of Qualification in which to fulfil the requirements for a full Certificate of Qualification. If you do not have 194 days of successful teaching experience since you first received your Provisional Interim Certificate to teach in Ontario, you must extend your Interim Certificate or it will expire. You may extend an Interim Certificate if you have proof of a job offer that requires membership in good standing in the College. In order to do so, you will be required to include the original of a current written job offer, along with a cover letter requesting an extension before your Interim Certificate of Qualification expires.
Permanent certification
You may convert your Interim Certificate of Qualification to a Permanent Certificate of Qualification when you have met all of the conditions of your Interim Certificate of Qualification.
