Path One

You have a university degree, and you are a current member of:

  • the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) or
  • the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) or
  • CPA Australia (CPAA)

CMA Ontario has mutual recognition agreements with these three international accounting bodies. To be eligible for advanced standing under a mutual recognition agreement, you must:

  • have qualified as a member of CIMA, CIPFA or CPAA by completing the entire CIMA, CIPFA or CPAA program
  • be a member in good standing with CIMA, CIPFA or CPAA with no outstanding disciplinary charges or outstanding complaints that are being investigated
  • not have previously attempted and failed a CMA Canada qualifying examination
  • declare any previous criminal convictions and/or any previous disciplinary actions against you

If you meet all of the above requirements, you are exempt from the CMA Entrance Examination and the CMA Strategic Leadership Program.

These are the steps you need to take to become a CMA:

Step 1: Submit your qualifications to CMA Ontario for evaluation together with an application for membership and the annual membership fee
Step 2: Fulfill the 24-month practical experience requirement
Step 3: Apply for accreditation as a CMA
